Blood Draw Experience in Barcelona Spain as a Foreigner

Posted by Grace on June 17, 2026

I had to have a blood draw to monitor my health condition when traveling. Traveling from the U.S., I was not sure if I could get the service easily. However, it turned out to be a very smooth process, despite a few minor hiccups!

My Experience in Barcelona

Most of the clinics (like MDB) are closed in the afternoon, so I chose a clinic that also functions as a testing center connected to a hospital, which is open all the time.

When I arrived, it was not crowded at all, and I was able to get service immediately.

Waiting Area The quiet waiting area at the clinic.

Here are a few key takeaways from my visit:

  • No physical passport needed: I did not bring my passport, but they said a photo of my passport on my phone was perfectly fine. They just needed to enter the information into the computer.
  • Payment & Voucher: I paid online (about €30) and forwarded my receipt to their email, which they printed out at the counter.
  • Friendly staff: The staff was very friendly. Even though her English was not great, we were able to communicate successfully.
  • Great skill: She was quick and did not cause much pain. She used a syringe rather than just a needle.
  • Registration details: The receptionist/phlebotomist was very friendly, but she did make a few mistakes on my registration: she misspelled both my name and my gender.
  • Accessing results: She gave me a sheet with my username and password, and explained in Spanish (which another customer kindly translated for me) that the results would be available today, though they didn't know exactly what time. To access them, I just needed to log into their website with the provided password.

How to Get a Blood Test in Spain

In Spain, you can easily purchase blood tests directly online without a doctor's referral using local private laboratory networks.

I recommend using Laboratorio de Análisis Clínicos (operated by Lab. Duran Bellido). They have extraction centers in major travel destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, Girona, and Ibiza, and allow you to walk in without an appointment.

Where to Get a Blood Test

Steps

  1. Purchase Online: Go to the website and purchase the test you need online (no doctor's prescription required).
  2. Receive Voucher: Receive a voucher ("bono") via email (valid for 3 months).
  3. Visit the Lab: Print or show the voucher on your phone at one of their extraction centers during their opening hours (no appointment needed).
  4. Get Blood Drawn: Walk in and get your blood drawn.
  5. Get Results: Access your results securely online, typically within 24 to 48 hours.
